Stage 7 Recap - The Marathon

8 Days . . . 7 Stages . . . 160 KM . . . 1 Tough Runner

The 2009 ENDURrun will be remembered for the heat and humidity. Nowhere in the 7-year history of The ENDURrun has the weather been so consistently draining, for each and every Stage. The results won't give credit to the conditions, but finishing the final Stage (the Marathon) of The 2009 ENDURrun would be the ultimate mental and physical challenge.

Like we expected such conditions, last year we decided to change the starting time to an earlier 7:30 a.m. start this year. This allowed for about an hour of bearable conditions before the heat and humidity moved in to further test these remarkable athletes.

Some injury and blister concerns were evident amongst the participants. They have persevered so far, but could they battle through these and the weather, and finish to become 1 Tough Runner?

Ultimate - Male (14 Competitors)

Bob had a big enough overall lead to take it easy in the last Stage and still defend his title. However, as a true champion, Bob ran strong and consistent regardless of his lead. Despite the humidity, Bob used a negative split for the 2nd half to win his 7th Stage of the event in 2:59:06, and claimed his 3rd championship title. Congratulations Bob Jackman, 2009 ENDURrun Male Champion.

Jeff ran the first 30 KM with Bob and used his Marathon experience to further distance himself from Dave. While Dave ran a 17 minute PB, it was not enough to catch Jeff in this Stage or overall. Jeff claimed his second 2nd place overall finish in The ENDURrun (2007) with a solid week of running.

Dave capped off a year and a half of preparation for this event, and it showed. Dave battled Jeff throughout the entire event, and was only 2:17 back of Jeff heading into the Marathon. A huge Marathon PB and 3rd place overall are rewarding accomplishments for such determination and preparation.

Chris was 5th overall heading into the Marathon, but moved into 4th overall with his best run of the week.

Steve Metzger also moved up a spot in the overall standings to 5th due to his Marathon effort. Amazingly, Steve seemed to get stronger as the event went along.

Justin finished 6th overall, and it should be noted that Justin pushed his young son Jacoby in a stroller during the 10 KM time trial the day before. Certainly a highlight of the competition.

Jack moved into 7th overall with an incredible 2nd half of his Marathon to wrap up an extremely consistent week.

Savvas (8th) and Costas (10th) both enjoyed the challenge of The ENDURrun, a return to their hometown. A successful homecoming to be sure.

Holger finished in 9th place overall, and due to his experience, finished over 13 minutes ahead of last years time.

Paul took on this big challenge not knowing what to expect. Although daunting at times throughout, Paul finished 11th overall, happy and satisfied, with 2010 on his mind.

12th place overall went to Steve, who completed his 3rd ENDURrun, a remarkable physical feat.

Dave Nash finished 13th overall, who is using The ENDURrun as a training camp in preparation for his run across Canada next year. Good luck Dave!

And last but certainly not least, Kela finished in 14th spot overall. A true inspiration for everyone, Kela demonstrated that anyone can accomplish whatever they set out to do, with determination and perseverance.

Ultimate - Female (8 Competitors)

Seeing the top three females going through the half way mark even, with Melanie only 22 seconds back, set up for an exciting finish. Jackie held a 4:45 lead over April heading into the last Stage, but with the heat and the distance of the Marathon, the lead was not insurmountable. With Jackie and Joanne each running negative splits, and with April falling off the pace, the overall victory was not in doubt and Jackie defended her title. Jackie's consistency and experience proved to be too much in this talented field. Congratulations Jackie Jackman, 2009 ENDURrun Female Champion.

While April was 3rd in this Stage, she finished 2nd overall and challenged Jackie right to the end.

3rd place overall went to Joanne, who used The ENDURrun more as a training camp, running heavy mileage prior to the event. We hope that the training week pays off with a PB later in the season.

Melanie was 4th overall, a promising and encouraging result due to her disappointment last year.

Tiffany, 5th overall, finished one spot ahead of her training partner Sarah. While Sarah vows to return in 2010, Tiffany wants to return in 2011 as she will be in New Zealand next year.

Sonja, 7th overall, was a steady competitor throughout, never looking like the challenge was beyond her. What a great attitude and demonstration of will power.

Maureen was never concerned with time, enjoying all that each beautiful Stage provided. Maureen finished 8th overall, and capped off a great week of running by running the marathon with good friend Joanne.

Sport (5 Competitors)

Stefan set a new Sport record due to his strong 3:11:11 Marathon Stage and has now set the new standard for future competitors.

Chris MacKinnon set a couple of PB's on his way to an impressive 2nd place finish overall.

The only person to compete in all 7 ENDURrun competitions, Steven Parke finished in 3rd place overall.

Former Ultimate finisher (2007) Chris Kay returned for a 4th place Sport finish.

Lindsay Oldham demonstrated her remarkable athleticism in such a difficult running event, as her specialties are squash and wrestling.

Relay (4 Teams)

Josh Kraemer ran a gutsy first half in 1:25:20 only to be worn down by the humidity. Still running a great 3:09:26, this enabled the TriCity Striders to set a new Relay record. Second place went to the Chariots for Hire, with Chris Duke running this Stage for them. Third place was the Runners' Choice Distance Dudes, with Alex Lalonde as their Stage runner. Tiffany was the Stage runner for the Runners' Choice Distance Divas, which ended up 4th. Congratulations all Relay participants.

Guest Runners (12 Competitors)

We had 12 Guest runners share The ENDURrun Marathon experience. We hope the support we provided allowed you to enjoy our event, and that you accomplished your goals.

Overall, there were 74 Guest runners in our event this year.

From the Race Director

Some participants will return. Some participants will not. But all participants should be extremely proud of what they accomplished. I am certain it is a highlight of their running career.

We could not have done this without our dedicated sponsors and volunteers. Special thanks to a great race crew, your support is very much appreciated.

The 2009 ENDURrun was a tremendous success, and we look forward to providing the opportunity for you to take the ultimate running challenge and accomplish a runners' ultimate goal in 2010. Please join us.

The format of The ENDURrun combines endurance and speed, patience and control, pacing and strategy. It combines road racing with technical trail running. It combines flat Stages with mountain Stages. It has time trials and mass starts. It has the pressure and challenge of racing day after day, without allowing for complete rest and recovery. It is the ultimate running challenge and a runners' ultimate goal. The ENDURrun does not favour one discipline over another, and as such, the winner of The ENDURrun is the most complete runner.

Congratulations Bob Jackman and Jackie Jackman, 2009 ENDURrun Champions!
