Stage 6 Recap

10km Time Trial

The weather conditions were beautiful but hot. This stage is another exciting one because of the time trial format, plus the Sports Competitors and many guest runners participate. It's the biggest race of the ENDURrun, but maybe it is just the fact that is 10 km and not 25.6 km like the day before at Chicopee. In any case, it is exciting to have such a large number of runners in the time trial where each runner starts off in 1 minute intervals, the fastest runner starting last and slower ones first. In this race you are chasing and being chased, just like the 15 km time trial of Stage 2.

This event takes place the day before the marathon and you'd think that most Sport and Ultimate runners would be wanting to rest, recover, and prepare for tomorrow's marathon. However, this is seldom the case that we see. All the runners put their heart into it, literally! They take off from the park in Elmira and bolt down the road and out of sight all very quickly. Runners tend to fall into their race pace once they get out into the beautiful agricultural country side through Mennonite country. Quite often within the first 5 km some runners are catching up on the ones they are following. It is an exciting finish to watch as the start takes near an hour as the runners take off one by one, but at the finish line the faster runners are approaching the slower ones and they approach the line together. The runners are an impressive sight coming eastward into the sun and towards the finish line as you can see them quite far out. This is a great spectator event to watch these impressive, Tough runners.

Today's recap will be brief as the Race Director is helping prepare for tonight's barbeque at his home for all the Competitors [and the webmaster guy who is writing this needs to be part of his daughter Isabelle's 7th birthday pool party!].

Ultimate – Male (14 Competitors)

Bob Jackman continues to impress all of us with his very strong time today after completing nearly 108 km this week already at race pace! Jeff also proved his mettle with a strong 10 km way south of 40 min. Dave was off his faster times, but this stands him well for tomorrow's grueling marathon. Justin wheeled in looking like the fast, great dad he is, pushing his baby son Jacob in a runner's stroller for the entire 10 km! Good on you Jacob for doing your first 10 km! Savvas and Chris finished in the same time, despite crossing the line several minutes apart. Boxer Dave started off looking scary and tough with his Mexican wrestler's mask on, but quickly discovered the heat was quite unbearable after 2 km - Elmira townsfolk will be talking about that for a while. Even with the mask he finished faster this year than last. Kela continues to slog it on damaged ankles, but with a grin. We miss Duff on the course, but he took on volunteer duties - wearing another wrestler's mask!

Way to go Ultimate men!

Ultimate – Female (8 Competitors)

The Ultimate women's race is proving exciting - each runner is showing her strength each day with the order of finishing often changing. April and Joanne finish ahead of Jackie, though she still holds the yellow Jersey. But the separation was only 25 seconds showing that they are well matched on this shorter, flat course. This was a tough race for them to pace as they didn't have the advantage of seeing their competitors due to their different start times. Mel and Tiff followed close behind, likely appreciating today's shorter distance given the continuing hot weather we've had all week. Maureen and Sonja continue to switch finishing places. Sarah shows true grit even to have the guts to show up today. She was hobbling and icing her ankle after spraining it yesterday on the first loop of Chicopee. This is one our strongest displays of perseverance and determination yet this week.

These women continue to amaze us!

Sport Division (5 Competitors)

It is great to see the Sport event as this is like a race inside a race. Stefan continues to dominate the field with a strong sub-40. Chris McKinnon PB'ed today - congrats! Lindsay, Chris, and Steven all ran well today and deserve a salute!

Relay – 4 teams

Stefan G's time for Chariots for Hire brought them in first today, actually, the first time they've been first this year! TriCity continues their strong finishes with Teresa, their only female runner on the team. The Dudes and Divas members pulled hard for their team today too.

Guest Runners – 27 Competitors

With 27 Guests today we had a great addition to today's race. We had 3 under 40 min, and another tied-time. Eight runners finished sub-45 min. There were many return runners and new ones too. We welcome you all! We are really impressed with the runners who finished over the 1 hour mark - it is a hot, long time to be out there and all the credit to you. We know that there were some first-time 10 k runners too - another commendable accomplishment for you today [that's you Betsy! Others too?].

Preview

Tomorrow is the culmination of a tremendous accomplishment for all the runners who will toe the line. They have prepared long and hard for this event, and battled their bodies, the elements, the trails, and the hills to make it to the final Stage - the marathon. You've all done so well to get here regardless of tomorrow's outcome. It is going to be Tough! But after watching you all this week - you are up to it.

Tonight we meet at the Race Director's family's home for a BBQ. A great social event for everyone, including families, to further get to know each other, swap stories, show off bruises, and fuel up for tomorrow.

Tomorrow will start off at 22C and reach 28C. Rest well.
