Stage 4 Recap

Stage 4 Recap - The ‘Hilly’ 10 Miler

Lingering humidity remained, but was breaking. A little breeze, some shade, a few drops of rain made the conditions almost bearable. The deer flies, unfortunately, were not bearable. What a nuisance!

Following the draining 30 km Trail Stage yesterday, there was no let up for the competitors today, as this was the first of the two back-to-back hilly Stages.

Stage 4 is the only evening Stage, which certainly allowed some additional rest for the participants, but also may provide some more anxiety during the day in anticipation of the later start.

After the competitors walked the 600 m as a group to the starting line, off they went to tackle 10 miles of relentless hills on tired legs.

Ultimate – Male (15 Competitors)

A strong hill runner, Bob entered this Stage with a 9:40 lead in the overall standings, and added to his lead by dominating the field and winning by 4:53. Bob’s overall lead is now a commanding 14:33. Jeff started conservatively and ran tactically, finishing 2nd and remaining in 2nd place overall. Dave finished 3rd, 1:04 behind Jeff, and is 2:14 behind Jeff in the overall standings.

Justin passed Chris into 3rd place in the overall standings, which is turning into a great competition between the two. Only 22 seconds separate them after 82.2 km.

Ultimate – Female (8 Competitors)

Jackie won her 4th Stage, although by the closest margin of victory so far, only 40 seconds over April. Jackie now has a 6:56 overall lead, but is April now starting to make a challenge for Jackie’s Gold Jersey? Joanne ran strong, finishing in 3rd place, only 1:46 off of April’s pace, and still remains in 3rd overall.

Relay (4 Teams)

Rich Tremain continued the dominance by the TriCity Striders Relay Team, finishing with the only sub 1 hour performance, in 58:30. The TriCity Striders now lead by 40:28 over 2nd place Chariots for Hire, who had Scott Cameron running their leg today. Chris Rhydderch and Tanya Feeney ran for the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes and the Runners’ Choice Distance Divas Relay Teams respectively. Congratulations to all.

Guest Runners (7 Competitors)

Russell Wood, Larry Hardman, Brian Verspagen and Jodi Kalman ran their 2nd Stage this year, and thanks for joining us again. Also joining in the fun today was Becky Cosford, John Summers and Mike Lahn. We will see Larry, Becky and John at Stage 6 as well.

From the Race Director

With much of the race crew performing other duties today, it was nice spending a couple of hours with my son Jordan today doing the site set up and course set. We are usually doing different duties, so this was a treat for me. Our entire race crew is getting better and better each Stage, and the competitors really appreciate your commitment. Thanks so much to everyone.

Great performances on tired legs today. A much deserved rest day on Thursday precedes THE most gruelling Stage on Friday.

Congratulations everyone. Rest well.
