Stage 2 Recap – 15 KM Time Trial

Another humid day today. Since the humidity is supposed to break tonight, just getting through this Stage was a goal for most participants.

Stage 2 is a 15 KM Time Trial at beautiful Riverside Park in Cambridge. Runners would start 1 minute apart, in reverse order of finish from Stage 1.

Not only were participants dealing with fatigue from running a half marathon yesterday, but they also had to face the unique challenges that a Time Trial format creates.

Ultimate – Male (15 Competitors)

Bob took advantage of starting last by making up the staggers on his closest competition. Bob had the fastest time for the 2nd consecutive Stage and will retain the Gold Jersey, while increasing his overall lead to 3:29 over Jeff. Jeff came 2nd today and remains 2nd overall. Dave placed 3rd today, and also remains in 3rd place overall.

Less than 2 minutes separate positions 4 through 6, and it will be interesting to see how the overall placings change as this competition continues.

Ultimate – Women (8 Competitors)

Jackie also utilized her advantageous starting position to keep an eye on her competition, and won her 2nd consecutive Stage and is now 1:58 ahead of Joanne. Jackie has earned the honour of continuing to wear the Gold Jersey. Joanne came 2nd today and remains 2nd overall. April placed 3rd today, and also remains in 3rd place overall.

The top 3 runners are starting to pull away from the pack, but there is still a long, long way to go.

Relay (4 Teams)

Stage 2 course record holder Rich Tremain (2003 - 48:47) ran for the TriCity Striders as a last minute injury replacement, and still won comfortably in 54:17. TriCity Striders lead over Chariots for Hire is now 11:16. Dave Rutherford ran the Relay leg for Chariots for Hire and had the 2nd fastest time. Bruce Grant ran very well for Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes, as did Rebecca Blackburn for Runners’ Choice Distance Divas.

Guest Runners – (1 Competitor)

Rachel Campbell ran as a Guest and bettered her 2 hour goal by finishing in 1:50:52. Congratulations Rachel.

From the Race Director:

What a great day. Despite the humid conditions, there was excellent competition, strategy, atmosphere, camaraderie and food. And the race crew stated that this was their best organized Stage ever. I am not surprised. I see their effort, and commend them on their work ethic.

Having one minute to talk privately with each participant prior to sending them on their run is a bonus for me. Soaking in the excitement, the nervousness, the strategy, I feel privileged.

Everyone ran well today. Not only were some participants facing back to back races for the first time, they were also facing a time trial format for the first time, while battling high humidity! Congratulations!

Rest well participants. Tomorrow’s Stage is very demanding. I expect to see some changes in the overall standings. Good luck!
