It took a lot of courage to sign up for The ENDURrun.
It took a lot of determination to train for The ENDURrun.
And it took a lot of guts to show up to the starting line.
But 23 brave individuals assembled at the starting line of Stage 1 of The 7th Annual ENDURrun, and were about to begin what could be the highlight of their running career. After their first few steps, there would only be 160 KM to go!
Of the 23, there are 15 males and 8 females. There are 9 returnees from 2008 and 14 newcomers. Both the male and female defending champions are in the competition.
It was cool and raining during the pre-race meeting the night before, the opposite of the race day weather. Very humid conditions during the race added another degree of difficulty to an already difficult event.
Thunder, lightning and rain cut short the post race festivities, and the rain continued while the race crew dismantled the race site.
Ultimate – Men (15)
Bob Jackman, 2006 and 2008 Champion, was back to defend his title. And he picked up where he left off last year, claiming the Stage victory and the coveted Gold Jersey. Bob outdistanced Jeff Ashizawa by 1:05, not a huge lead considering the length of the event. Rounding out the top three was Dave Rutherford, 6:01 back of Bob. Dave is now leading the “top Rookie” competition, a new award this year.
It was great to have past Ultimate finishers back again – Bob, Jeff, Chris, Justin, Holger, Steve, Duff and Dave - although the humidity was not very welcoming.
And newcomers Savvas, Steve, Jack, Costas, Paul and Kela - my apologies for the weather.
Seriously, despite the adverse and stifling running conditions, spirits are high.
Ultimate – Women (8 Competitors)
With Jackie and Joanne running side by side for 16 KM, it was Jackie, the defending champion, who pulled away and claimed the Stage victory by 1:15. Jackie will now have the honour of wearing the Gold Jersey for Stage 2. Prior Champion and present Course Record Holder April finished 3rd, and is 3:01 back. Tiffany is leading the “top Rookie” competition, a new award this year.
Past finishers Jackie, Joanne, April, and Melanie were joined by newcomers Tiffany, Sarah, Maureen and Sonja.
Relay – (4 Teams)
Despite an excellent run by Chris Serran of the defending champions Chariots for Hire, The TriCity Striders ran to a 5:29 lead due to a strong effort from Solomon Tsewameskel. Both Runners’ Choice Relay team members, Brian Verspagen and Penny Rhydderch also ran well in the exhausting humidity.
Guest Runners – (15 Competitors)
Being a Guest Runner is a great way of experiencing The ENDURrun. Seven great Stages, seven different distances, seven unique challenges to choose from. Thanks to everyone who participated today, from the experienced to the first time half marathoners. There are too many to mention by name, but we hope it was all you expected, and more. It would be great to have you back.
From the Race Director:
This event has to be the Ultimate volunteering challenge as well, and I truly understand the commitment involved. Thanks again race crew!
And thanks participants, for allowing us the opportunity to witness your incredible achievement.
Congratulations to all participants at Stage 1 of The 7th Annual ENDURrun!
Good luck in Stage 2 tomorrow, a 15 KM time trial in Riverside Park, Cambridge Ontario.
