Stage 7 Recap

ENDURrun International 2008

Stage 7 Recap – The Marathon

With a full one-quarter of the total distance of the ENDURrun coming in the last stage, there is an enormous opportunity for runners to make up, or lose, time.  The morning broke beautifully, with sun and cool air greeting the runners as they arrived at RIM Park to run the final stage of the 2008 ENDURrun.

Ultimate – Male (18 runners)

The previous day’s 10km Time Trial did nothing to entrench the placings of the Ultimate Male division.  At the top, Bob Jackman was a mere 3:46 ahead of 2006 Champion Steve Formaneck.  Bob found himself in a familiar position as he lead by 3:11 heading into the marathon in 2006 as well.  This wasn’t the only close race heading into the marathon.  Michael Lavigne led Duff McLaren by 6:42 in the race for 10th place, while only 6:51 separated the trio of Alfred Patrick, a resurgent Michael and David Nash.  42.2 km would tell many stories this morning.

In a brave run, Michael Lavigne soldiered on through nagging injuries to complete the ENDURrun.  He could have not started, and no one would have questioned him, but he felt had come too far to not finish what he had started on this very stretch of road just a week before.  Duff, a veteran ENDURrun finisher and steady pacer, ran a very smart race, finishing 8th on the stage and slipping into the 10th overall position just ahead of a relieved and satisfied Michael.

In one of the best runs of the day, Holger Kleinke finished in 4th position on the stage, his highest placing of the week.  This moved him up one position in the overall standings, finishing in 6th place overall, just behind Steven Parke who finished his 6th ENDURrun.  Traditionally the first to enter the ENDURrun each year, he was usurped by another Steve.  This time it was Biggs, who had his wife hand him his completed entry form as he ran toward the finish line, and which he promptly handed to Race Director Lloyd Schmidt as he crossed the line.  Biggs held his 8th overall position, which he will be back to defend in 2009.

In what became a tradition this year, Alfred Patrick and John Lum Young finished together with big smiles on their faces.  Even though Michael Small negative split his marathon by an incredible 19 minutes, he was overtaken in the overall standings by the boxer, David Nash.  Alfred, with his steady pace, kept himself ahead of the other two in the overall standings.

Chris Duke went for his 6th PB of the week, but fell just short of his goal of 3:09, finishing in 3:11, good enough to qualify for Boston once again.  To even have the courage to attempt a marathon PB after running 120km in the week prior is evidence of Chris’ commitment to his training over the past year, and the effect that the ENDURrun can have on a runner.

Having to establish a gap on Bob, Steve went to work quickly as he took the race out faster than everyone had expected.  Steve set the pace as Bob settled in on his shoulder, knowing that if he stayed with him, the Ultimate crown would be his for a second time.  Try as Steve might, he could not lose Bob on the first lap, as he came through the half in 1:26:05, only two seconds ahead of Bob.  Steve continued the punishing pace as the day heated up and shade became scarce.  The asphalt warmed the air even more and by 30k, they were both dumping more water on their bodies than in their mouths.  Steve made a desperate move, knowing that if he didn’t create a gap he would run out of real estate.  A credit to his strength, Steve was able to establish a gap, but Bob would not be denied on this day and followed Steve into the finish line, 30 seconds in arrears, but close enough to claim his second ENDURrun International crown.

The other runners all displayed great courage and determination to complete the marathon in the increasing heat of the day.  Peter Smith, Andrew Carney, Steve Gaul, Victorio Hawkins, Chad McKillop, and Justin Pozin showed everyone why the have earned the title of “One Tough Runner”.

Ultimate – Female (4 Runners)

There were two races with the women.  One involved the Gold Jersey, Joanne Bink, and Jackie Gorski.  The other was between an improving Bronwyn Brock and Mary Pacell.  The marathon was the make-or-break for both womens’ races.

Mary, buoyed by her support team of Dawn and Theresa running with her, had a great day finishing in 4:48.  Bronwyn, leading Mary coming into the stage, ran great as well, finishing 13 minutes ahead of Mary and securing third place in the Female Ultimate division.

The battle for the Gold Jersey in the Female division mirrored that of the Male division, as Joanne stayed very close to Jackie throughout the first loop, both of them crossing halfway in an identical time of 1:38:14.  The battle heated up as the sun also grew stronger and everyone anticipated a thrilling finish.  Unfortunately, that finish would not happen as Joanne, suffering a tweaked muscle since Chicopee, had it flare up and could not continue at the pace she and Jackie were running.  Jackie continued on to an incredible negative split and ran 3:14.  Joanne’s injury reduced her to almost walking, but showing the incredible resolve that she has become known for, she finished the race and earned the title one tough runner.  Jackie, showing incredible patience and consistency, earned her first ENDURrun Ultimate title.

Sport Division (5 racers)

The Sport division was designed for those that wanted an introduction to the ENDURrun or for those that may not be able to get the time off of work to complete the whole event.  In either case, the Sport is not to be taken lightly as it features the two hardest stages of the ENDURrun.  As well, with only three stages, there is little time to establish or defend a position.

Jeff Ashizawa trailed Dave Rutherford by 3:17 heading into the marathon, setting up another exciting race.  Jeff’s blistering 1:29:44 first half put enough distance between him and Dave that he was able to finish in 3:19:17, thus claiming the Sport Division crown.  Dave finished a strong second in the stage and overall.  Chris McKinnon held onto his third place position while Brittany Baechler had a tremendous run, finishing fourth on the day, but not making up enough time to pass Robert Young.  Robert held onto fourth overall while Brittany took fifth.  Unfortunately, Nicole Mitchell had to pull out after the first loop of the marathon due to a previous Achilles injury.  Smartly, she did not want to risk further injury, but has vowed to return to complete the ENDURrun next year!

Relay - 6 teams

According to the rules of the Relay division of the ENDURrun, each relay team is allowed to include one Ultimate runner on their team.  Usually relay teams will use the Ultimate runner as the marathoner in their relay team. Alpha Wolf Squadron and Guelph Chariots For Hire had Ultimate runners on their team.  Bob Jackman ran for Alpha Wolf Squadron and Chris Duke ran for Chariots For Hire.  Alpha Wolf Squadron won the relay division on the strength of the Bob’s run, while Chariots for Hire solidified their second place finish with Chris’ run.  The Runner’s Choice Distance Dudes finished 3rd as Carston Kulcke ran a solid 4:08.  Ultimate runners Bronwyn Brock and David Nash finished the relay for Runners Choice Distance Divas and The Dementors.

Guest Runners

There were 8 guest runners today who took on the marathon.  Of all the stages to be a guest runner, this is the most difficult.  Not only is it the longest, the sun beat down on a course that has a distinct lack of shade.  What was noteworthy about the guest runners for this stage was that many of them were there in support of Ultimate runners, deciding that if their friend or loved one can run 160km, then they could run 42.2 of that with them.  The guest runners all did well and had a chance to experience the special nature of this event.

ENDURrun International 2008 Review:

Bittersweet.  That was the word used by many to describe the feeling of crossing the finish line.  For a year or more, this event has sat in their collective consciousness.  There were questions and doubts, about what to wear, what to eat, and if they would be able to finish.  All questions were answered this week.  The 100 miles that these runners traveled were difficult and sometimes punishing, but the spirit of the ENDURrun, with its devoted Race Director and tireless volunteers, pushed the runners to places within themselves that hadn’t yet found.  The camaraderie displayed each day between the runners, as they pursued both personal goals and race goals, was inspiring to all the spectators.  And the runners know, with it all over, there will be a little void.  But that will not last too long, not longer than it takes to recover from the 160km of running in one week, not longer than it takes to tell another friend the tale of the ENDURrun, not longer than it takes to sign up again to show that they are one tough runner.

Congratulations to Bob Jackman and Jackie Gorski on being the Ultimate Runner! And congratulations on your forthcoming wedding!
