Stage 6 Recap

10km Time Trial

Now that Chicopee is in the rearview mirror, the runners are looking forward to the marathon.  However, before they get to that start line, they have one more time trial to complete.  This second time trial, 10km in length, is a relatively flat point-to-point course.  Once again, the runners leave in one minute intervals, in reverse order according to their overall place.  The 10km distance makes this stage an ideal one for guest runners, of which there were many today.

Ultimate – Male (18 runners)

Recovering from Chicopee was on the mind of all the athletes, but some more so than others.  It was good to see Michael Lavigne back on the start line today after suffering from an aggravated knee yesterday.

There was no overall change in the standings today, but there were some great performances.  Bob Jackman and Steve Formaneck did not relent even though it was a shorter stage.  Bob dipped just under 35 minutes for his 10km while Steve ran 35:36.  This small margin increased Bob’s lead to 3:46 heading into the marathon.  The last time Bob won the ENDURrun he had a lead of 3:11 heading into the final stage.  Steve will work hard to not let history repeat.

Justin Pozin broke into the top three places in a stage with a sub-40 run today.  He has been running very well all week and this great 10km is evidence that his training leading into this event has been well planned. Chris Duke was back on track again with a PB of 40:06.

Even though they started a minute apart, John Lum Young and Alfred Patrick still finished side-by-side.  We are not sure if Alfred waited for John, or John sprinted up to Alfred, but the inseparable Trinidadians continued their strong ENDURrun

Other notable performances were Duff McLaren with a season’s best time 47:41, Michael Small with another increasingly strong performance of 48:43, and Steve Gaul, who wasn’t even going to do Stage 2 but finished Stage 6 in a time of 47:32.

The marathon awaits the runners and big changes can occur.  The difference between Michael Small and David Nash is only 8 seconds after 117.8km of running.  Bob’s lead of 3:46 is not much in a marathon, and even the 11 minutes separating Holger Kleinke and Steven Parke is tenuous.  It will be an exciting day to watch all the men lay it on the line.

Ultimate – Female (4 Runners)

Like the men, the women solved very little today.  Joanne Bink and Jackie Gorski both ran strong time trials, with Joanne finishing just above 40 minutes, at 40:09.  Jackie lost less than a minute, finishing in a time of 40:51.  With a mere 5:22 separating the two women, it will really come down to the late stages of the marathon.

In the race for third place, Mary Pacell took back a little time over Bronwyn Brock today.  Both women ran to personal best 10km times today (after having run 108km already this week), leaving under 10 minutes as the difference between them.  The marathon will be the one to tell us the final tale of the 2008 ENDURrun.

Relay - 6 teams

With only two stages left, the Guelph Chariots for Hire made a decisive move today and regained 8 minutes from the Alpha Wolf Squadron. Richard Olson ran a strong 40:13 for the Chariots while Darren Henry came in 49:40 for the Alpha Wolf Squadron.  The Runner’s Choice Distance Dudes also pulled themselves back some time on the shoulders of Adam Brock’s personal best time of 41:10.  Christine Bowman of the Runner’s Choice Distance Divas did very well in completing the point-to-point course in a time of 48:17, good for third in the Relay Division.  The Dementors, with Milena Protich walking finished today’s stage in 1:47:24.

Guest Runners

There were 18 guest runners today who all did very well.  The highlights of the guest runners were Terry Gehl, who ran a stellar 32:26.  Solomon Tsewameskel, overall stage winner for Stage 2, was back and ran another great time, 33:38.  Jodie Karrow was the first woman across the line in today, running 39:23.  Congratulations to the many guest runners who completed the stage today and we hope to see you at a future ENDURrun.

Sport Division (5 racers)

In the three stage division, there is not much opportunity to establish a lead or make up lost time.  Each stage is critically important and today was no exception.  Jeff Ashizawa was the first Sport Division runner across the line today, finishing in 38:12.  A mere 4 seconds behind Jeff’s time was Dave Rutherford.  Dave’s lead of 3:17 over Jeff will not be much during the marathon, and like the other divisions, it will be a nail-biter.  Chris established himself in third position with a run of 43:28, but it may be that Robert Young is ready to strike in the marathon.  Nicole Mitchell and Brittany Baechler continued to show their strength with great runs one day after a very difficult Chicopee stage.

Preview:

The marathon tells no lies.  You cannot fake a marathon and tomorrow the truth will be told.  While the athletes will all be trying to improve their overall standings, they will be looking inward to find the truth that lies within them.  For many, it is not about the placing, but about reaching their personal goals.  The thought of completing the ENDURrun was a foreign one, a lofty goal that may or may not have been possible.  But now, on the eve of the final and longest stage, these athletes can feel the end is near.  It will be one foot in front of the other until they reach their own personal goal.  Congratulations one getting to this point; now the race begins.
