Stage 4 Recap

Stage 4 Recap - The ‘Hilly’ 10 Miler

Setting the Stage . . .

After five and a half years of excellent weather at The ENDURrun, our weather-luck ran out.  Cool and rainy conditions would add yet another challenge to what was in store for these fine and tired athletes.

Today’s Stage was the first of the two back-to-back hilly Stages.  Not that the previous Stages were flat, but you have to run Wilmot Line to appreciate the meaning of hilly.  Imagine, starting on an uphill, finishing on an uphill, and having 10 miles of endless hills in between.  The winner of the combined times of this Stage and Stage 5 will be crowned the Mountain King.

Most of the race was run on a gravel road, adding to the variety of running surfaces encountered during this event.  The turnaround at 9 KM would allow the runners to check out their competition, which is heating up.

Stage 4 is also the only evening Stage.  The extra rest was most welcomed by all, especially following the physically draining 30 KM Trail run yesterday.

A unique aspect to this Stage is that the Start line is 600 m from the finish line, and all the competitors walk to the start line as a group.  The energy, support and camaraderie during this brief time is an unforgettable experience for the participants.

The competition is close and there are injury concerns.  It was sure to be an exciting Stage.

Ultimate – Male (18 Competitors)

After losing his Gold Jersey yesterday, Bob Jackman surged to an early lead and literally never looked back.  Bob went through the 5 KM mark in under 18 minutes and ran one of the fasted times ever on this course, 58:20.  Bob reclaimed the Gold Jersey and now has a slim overall lead of 1:07.  Steve Formaneck also ran one of the fastest times on this tough course, 1:01:05, for a 2nd place finish, and couldn’t have expected Bob’s performance today.  Chris Duke ran yet another Stage PB by over 2 minutes to claim 3rd place today and remain in 3rd place overall.

Chad and Justin continue to battle it out, finishing only 20 seconds apart today.

Steven Parke showed his strength and experience (a 4 time ENDURrun finisher) to claim 6th place today, 45 seconds ahead of Steve Biggs, who is starting to feel better after experiencing injury issues earlier on.  Only 39 seconds back was Holger, who trains on Wilmot Line frequently, and must have felt painfully at home during his run.

Michael Lavigne had perhaps his best run of the event, finishing strong and moving up a spot in the overall standings.

Victorio out-kicked Duff, edging him out by 5 seconds in a friendly competition to the finish line.

John and Alfred continued to run together, and held off Michael Small by 7 seconds.

Steve Gaul continues to show his determination in completing this event, after missing a lot of training in preparation for this gruelling endurance test.

Andy brought his family along from New York, giving him added inspiration and a cheering squad.  Sorry about the rain.

Dave Nash jokingly tried to hitchhike the last 100 m, but since there were no takers, he happily competed the entire distance.

Peter looked strong and comfortable as he crossed the finish line in great spirits.

Ultimate – Female (5 Competitors)

Joanne also trains on Wilmot Line, and had quiet confidence heading into Stage 4.  But she would be pushed to her limits today.  Although Joanne ran 1:31 seconds faster than last year, she held off Jackie by only 6 seconds in winning this Stage in 1:08:12.  Both had tremendous runs today, with Joanne maintaining her Gold Jersey and now has an overall lead of 2:56 over Jackie.

Bronwyn, with her great and vocal support crew, ran her best Stage of the event today, and finished 4 seconds ahead of ever-smiling Mary Pacell.

Unfortunately, Melanie Boultbee sustained a leg injury and was unable to start the Stage today, ending her attempt at finishing her 3rd ENDURrun.  We wish you the best in your recovery Mel, and hope to see you back once again.

Relay (5 Teams)

It looks like a two-team race shaping up between the Alpha Wolf Squadron and the Guelph Chariots for Hire.  Both had top runners today in their quest for the championship.  Mike Strano ran a blistering pace to finish 1st for the Alpha Wolf Squadron in 57:46, but not far behind was Chris Serran of the Guelph Chariots for Hire in 1:00:38.  Brian Verspagen ran the leg for the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes, and ran faster than he did last year, finishing 3rd today.  Tanya Feeney ran well in 1:28:29 for her part of the Runners’ Choice Distance Divas team.  Milena Protich walked the difficult course in 3:16:27, experiencing heat, humidity, rain and cold throughout her journey.

Guest Runners (5 Competitors)

Brenda Smith, Mike Lahn, Shimon Schwartz and Krista Kraemer were Guest runners today.  We should have treated our Guests to better weather, but that was beyond our control.  We hope you had a great time and that you join us again for another Stage, another year.  It looks like you ran well and enjoyed your run.

From the Race Director

Unfortunately, the wet weather cut short the post race festivities, normally a time to rest, relax and share experiences. We missed that, and hope for better weather on Friday.

Hats off to the great volunteers who stood in the cold rain for hours while marshalling, at water stations, at the post race food party, and at the equipment set up and tear down. You are great is an understatement.

Next Stage Preview

Four out of seven Stages done. More than half way (82.2 KMs completed). The difficult Bechtel Park Stage and one of the Mountain Stages accomplished. A rest day tomorrow. All good. But there is much more in the way of your goal. The most difficult Stage. Enough said.
