Stage 3 Recap

ENDURrun International 2008

Stage 3 Recap – 30K Trail Race

Today’s stage encapsulated all that the ENDURrun is and can be.  It was a day spent at the ends of the spectrum; triumph and despair, joy and disappointment, people doing more than they thought possible and people not able to do as much as they know they can.

The day broke with fog laying low, dampening the grass fields on which the runners would spend their next few hours.  The coolness of the air was welcomed, but the uncertainty of which way the weather would go gave pause for thought to the runners.  In the end, the strengthening sun burned off the fog and the runners had the heat and humidity to deal with as well.

This 30k trail race is six loops of a 5k course.  Each loop has 8 hills, and while these hills are not difficult in and of themselves, when combined they provide a formidable challenge for any runner.  More so than either of the other long stages, the 30k trail race at Bechtel Park is a mental challenge.  The challenge is that you can actually run every part of the 5k loop.  Unlike Stage 5 at Chicopee Ski Resort, where walking some of the long hills is foreseeable and even advisable, the hills at Bechtel Park are gradual and shorter.  However, they never stop and as such runners are challenged mentally as the course slowly drains the athletes of their energy and their will.  Doing well at this stage requires as much mental strength as it does physical strength.

Ultimate – Female (5 runners)

While the Gold Jersey was on the shoulders of Joanne Bink, it was still up for grabs in the standings.  With a mere 3:15 separating the first three women, and 30k of trails to be covered, nothing was certain.

Melanie Boultbee established the early pace as she lead the group of three through the first 15k.  Jackie Gorski found her happy place on the shoulder of Joanne and was not going to relent that position.  With seconds separating the women lap after lap, the volunteers and fans began to wonder if they were in for another sprint finish, similar to one involving Bob Jackman and Brad Cunningham in 2006.  This time, would it be Bob’s fiancé Jackie kicking the final sprint? Melanie was the first to fall off the pace, as her early push began to take its toll.  She went for it and left everything on the course, showing how tough a runner she is.  Jackie and Joanne started their last lap literally side-by-side, leaving 5k to determine the stage winner.  Jackie pushed Joanne on every flat, every hill, and around every corner.  5k and 8 hills later, Joanne emerged first from the forest and finished just 30 seconds ahead of Jackie, thereby winning her third straight stage and retaining the Gold Jersey for another day.

Mary Pacell continued to show dogged determination and consistency as she ran very well today; her 5k split times were all within 2 minutes of each other.  This consistency solidified her position in the women’s Ultimate division.

Bronwyn Brock took another big step toward her goal of finishing the ENDURrun and being able to “lace up [her] shoes again after it’s over” but, today she did so with the support of the Official Bronwyn Brock Fan Club.  With many fans lining the course, some on crutches even, and some even running beside her, she had the loudest and most enthusiastic fans the ENDURrun has ever seen!

Ultimate – Male (18 Runners)

Today is the first of the three longer stages (Stage 3, Stage 5, Stage 7) where standings can drastically change.  Minutes, not just seconds, can be lost quickly if someone has a bad day.  Bob Jackman, leading Steve Formaneck by 3:29, pulled on the Gold Jersey for the second time today.

Steven Formaneck’s start let everyone know that he was feeling good.  He started out quickly and worked to get a short lead over Bob by 10k.  Bob held the gap until about 20k, when his legs started to tire.  Steve, to his huge credit, maintained his pace and began to put some distance between him and the Gold Jersey. While Steve continued his strong pace, Bob faltered and lost significant time on the last loop.  Steve, in a time of 2:04:53, took both the stage and the overall lead, thus claiming the Gold Jersey.  Bob came in at 2:09:57 and now looks to recover well for another hard run tomorrow.

Chris Duke wrote his 30k splits from last year on a piece of cardboard and hung them at the finish line, using that as inspiration for today’s race.  Chris set two Personal Bests (PB) in the last two stages, and it was his detailed plan that made it three for three today.  Justin Povin and Chad McKillop, who entered the stage in 5th and 6th place respectively, kept in touch with Chris for the first loop.  Poised and ready to make a move today, as the day heated up and the hills piled up, Chad, a first-time ENDURrun participant, slowed down with each passing lap.  Without prior knowledge of the course and the toll it can take, he watched as ENDURrun veterans Chris and Steven Parke ran on, both holding their splits even throughout the day.  Steven ended up finishing 5th on the day while Chris, who split all 6 loops within 45 seconds of each other, lowered his Bechtel Park PB by 3 minutes 1 second with a 3rd place finish.  Justin had a very good day and stayed in the hunt with a strong 4th place showing today.

The dynamic pair of John Yum Long and Alfred Patrick supported each other throughout the stage, finishing in a tie and maintaining their 3 second separation.

Holger Kleinke looked stoic and controlled as he ran smartly throughout the stage, staying within one minute of each previous lap.  David Nash and Steve Gould finished within 10 second of one another, but had decidedly different outlooks on the race.  David, a professional boxer, declared this race harder than taking a right hook on the chin, while Steve smiled and joked his way around the course, proving that you can have fun at Bechtel.

The real tough runners today were Peter Smith and Andrew Carney.  Andrew commutes from Buffalo, NY each day to compete at the ENDURrun and returns home to take his kids to football and cheerleading each night.  He ran Bechtel Park in 3:31 and then went to wait for an hour at the border.  Peter, in a show a toughness that many others would not be able to muster, passed the start line to begin his last lap while others were eating and getting massages.  He later confessed to not looking at the runners who were done as he finished in 4:05:36 and ticked off another box on his To-Do List (Stage 3 – DONE).

There was some bad news today.  Unfortunately, on the second of six laps, Jeff Ashizawa, who entered the stage in 3rd place overall, strained his calf.  An ENDURrun veteran and runner-up last year, Jeff understands this course and what it requires from the runner.  Jeff stopped to stretch in the hope that the calf would improve.  Courageously pushing through a third loop, Jeff recognized that the issue in his calf was not going to go away and rather than run to an injury, he made the difficult decision to withdraw from the race.  Hopefully, the calf will improve and we will see Jeff in the Sport division starting on Friday.

After three stages and almost 4:30:00 of running, only 1:30 separates Steve Formaneck and Bob in the fist two positions.  With Jeff not finishing the stage, everyone else moves up one place, which puts Chris into 3rd place overall.  The biggest mover today was Steve Parke, an four-time ENDURrun Ultimate finisher, who showed his vast knowledge of the course and the race in moving up three positions today, jumping into 6th place just ahead of Holger Kleinke and Steven Biggs and only 7 minutes behind 5th place Chad McKillop.  Justin Pozin is solidly in 4th place.  The closest battle now seems to be between Victorio Hawkins and Michael Lavigne, with only 33 seconds separating 9th and 10th place.

Relay - 6 teams

The interesting aspect of the relay is that things can change very quickly as fresh runners begin every stage.  The Dementors continued to show their toughness as Ian Kennedy began walking the 30k course at 5:00am.  Finishing to loud applause, Ian crossed the line in 5:57:10.  The Runners Choice Distance Divas showed their support for Ultimate Runner Bronwyn as their runner, Andrea Brookfield, ran the course with her.  The Runners Choice Distance Dudes had Joe Morgan run their stage and he did very well at Bechtel, finishing in 3:18:10.  The Guelph Chariots For Hire runner Darrell Cooney entered the stage with an 18 minute lead over second-place Runners Choice Distance Dudes.  With a time of  2:39:09, Darrell increased their lead over the Distance Dudes to 39 minutes despite re-aggravating a previous injury at 15k.  Darrell pushed through the second 15k with determination, agony, and a noticeable limp.  However, the Alpha Wolf Squadron came roaring back from 4th place to the overall lead on the strength of 2005 ENDURrun Champion Mike Strano’s 1:58:41.  Mike ran the 4th fastest time ever at this course and improved on his time from last year by 12 minutes.  This tremendous performance now leaves Alpha Wolf Squadron with a 2:50 lead over Guelph Chariots For Hire.  This is shaping up to be an exciting relay division!

Guest Runners

Six guest runners braved Bechtel Park today.  John Matthews was the first to finish in a time 2:24:42, good for 8th overall at today’s stage.  Tiffany Dejak ran a strong 2:41:51, good for 4th place amongst all the women running today. Maija Heikkila ran as part of the Official Bronwyn Brock Fan Club and did very well finishing alongside her friend.  Special mention should be made for Dawn Lowe, who has completed two of the first three stages as she supports her friend, Ultimate runner Mary Pacell.  Dawn again performed well and enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the volunteers and fellow runners.

Team Schmidt

Each year, race director Lloyd Schmidt enlists the support of his wife Julie and their six kids, to help organize and put on the ENDURrun.  They all devote countless hours throughout the year in preparation for this event, and then spend the week of the ENDURrun literally running around making sure everything is occurring perfectly.  However, at the Bechtel Park stage, the six kids, ranging in age from 22 to 12, run one lap each as Team LJ6K (Lloyd, Julie, 6 kids).  They performed very well today and improved their 30k time by over 2 minutes from last year.  The other runners enjoyed the energy and support that Team LJ6K showed for each other.  On behalf of all the participants of the ENDURrun, thank you for all your hard work and a huge congratulations on your individual personal bests for each lap and your family personal best.

Preview:

The runner’s get an extra 12 hours of rest tomorrow as the ENDURrun moves to its one evening stage.  Stage 4 covers 10 miles of rolling hills on the outskirts of Waterloo and is the first of the two Mountain Stages (the other is Stage 5, a 25.5k mountain trail run).  The Ultimate runners with the lowest combined time for Stage 4 and 5 will be named the King and Queen of the Mountain and will be awarded the Blue Jersey at the completion of the ENDURrun.  The course starts with a quick uphill and a flat first few kilometers, but then it either or up down for the last 13k, ultimately finishing with a higher elevation than the start.  After a long day at Bechtel Park, whose legs will be ready for the strength needed for the uphill and be ready to absorb the pounding of the downhill?
