Stage 2 Recap

With southern Ontario just millimeters away from its rainiest summer in recorded history, the runners joyously welcomed today’s morning sun.  The time trial awaited them as yesterday’s half-marathon took root in their legs.  On the docket, a loop of Riverside Park followed by a long hill and an out-and-back trail section.

The time trial is an interesting race format and its inclusion is something that makes the ENDURrun such a unique running event.  After battling each other for 21.1k yesterday, the runners now start a minute apart in the reverse order of their half-marathon finish.  The Gold Jerseys are the last of the Ultimate Runners to leave the start line, with the rest of the field running ahead of them.  The test for all the runners lies in their ability to run hard while alone, but with the knowledge that they are both the chased and the chaser.

With strong performances yesterday, Bob Jackman and Joanne Bink established themselves as the early leaders and, as such, donned the Gold Jerseys today.

Ultimate – Male (19 Runners)

Bob Jackman, wearing the Gold Jersey for this stage, was the last Ultimate Runner to begin.  Lined up in front of him on the course would be the rest of the competition.  Without knowing how fast they were going, it would be an interesting day for him.  And coming off strong runs yesterday, Steve Formaneck, Jeff Ashizawa, and Chris Duke were looking to take some time out of Bob’s lead.

Groups quickly came together and by 7k into the race packs of runners had formed.  Heading into the trails Michael Lavigne, Victorio Hawkins, Duff McLaren, and David Nash were working together.  David, entering the trail called out “Those guys are awesome!”, a testament to the camaraderie that continues both on and off the road.  Following just a few moments later, Steve Formaneck had already overtaken Jeff and was holding off the large group working hard to catch him.  Bob, Jeff, and Chris followed Steve into the trail, just seconds behind.

Tree cover provided some respite from the sun for the men as they ran the most scenic part of the course.  An aid station and a couple of kilometers later, they re-emerged, with the order a little more shaken up.

Steven Biggs was the first Ultimate Runner across the line.  From his placing yesterday, Steve started 14 minutes ahead of Bob today, but was able to hold off  both him and the other Ultimate Runners.  It was a great run for the 2007 ENDURrun finisher.  Following Steve in were Victorio and Holger Kleinke, both having good days!  Justin Pozin and Chad McKillop swapped stage finishing positions today, 5th and 6th respectively, with Steven Parke and Steve Gaul (whose injured foot looks to be doing well) both improving their place by 2 positions over yesterday (to 7th and 14th, respectively) .  Positions 10 through 13 amazingly did not change from yesterday to today, while the Trinidadian friendship of John Lum Young and Alfred Patrick kept them close together.  Peter Smith, Andrew Carney and Michael Small all continued to run well as they knocked off another stage in their pursuit of completing the Ultimate challenge.

At the front of the race, the order mirrored yesterday’s final result.  Bob retained his Gold Jersey while increasing his lead to 3:26 over Steve Formaneck, who continues to show great improvement over last year.  Just over three minutes behind Steve, Jeff awaits and Chris is under five minutes behind Jeff.  There is not a lot of time separating the men at the top and with over 100km left to run, there is a lot time left to make it up.

Another interesting race is developing between Holger, Steven Parke, and Steve Biggs, as less than one minute separates the three men.  However, the closest race is between John and Alfred.  Coming from Trinidad, they, along with Victorio, traveled over 4000km to be at the ENDURrun, but after two days and 36.1 km of running, they are only 3 seconds apart.

Ultimate – Women (5 Runners)

Joanne Bink pulled on her first Gold Jersey this morning and represented it well.  Last to begin, she had the other women to chase down over 15k.

Bronwyn and Mary both showed great strength of character today after an unfortunate turn of events lead them off course.  When they could have become frustrated and given in, they both ran even harder, ultimately finishing within three minutes of each other and demonstrating to everyone what it takes to be an extra tough runner.

Melanie Boultbee, Jackie Gorski, and Joanne continued their three-way battle for the lead.  Joanne had the advantage of starting last, which left Melanie and Jackie to run without knowledge of how Joanne was doing.  However, much like the men’s race, the three lead women had come together by the time they hit the trail.  Joanne led Jackie into the trail, while Melanie was up ahead of both of them.  Even though she mistook a puddle for a water station, Joanne didn’t get deterred and she was able to increase her overall lead today, but not by much! Today’s finishing order had Melanie swapping places with Jackie, taking second this stage (only 42 seconds back of Joanne), while Jackie was only 56 seconds back of Melanie.  Joanne extended her overall lead over Jackie to 2:20, while Melanie took some time off Jackie’s lead over her, which now stands at just 55 seconds.  The three women finished the stage within three minutes of each other and continue to challenge anyone to predict the finishing order come the end of the week.

Relay (6 Teams)

While they may not challenge for the overall win, The Dementors continued to show that they are the toughest Relay team out there.  Comprised of only two people, Milena Protich and Ian Kennedy, they are walking their way through the ENDURrun.  Milena started at 6:00am this morning and completed the course in a time 3:01:57.  We will continue to be inspired daily by these wonderful athletes!

The relay continues to take shape as the Runners Choice Distance Dudes, with David Bedroisian running, took the relay stage win in a time of 1:06:03.  This means that they got a little closer to the leaders Guelph Chariots For Hire, who had Scott Cameron finishing second in 1:09:24.  In a great performance, the Runners Choice Distance Divas finished third amongst the relay teams on the strength of Joanna Fedy’s time of 1:13:29.  Alpha Wolf Squadron continued to perform well as Craig Taylor brought them home in a time of 1:19:23.  This leaves the Guelph Chariots For Hire with a 20 minute overall lead, but anything can happen in the relay division, when fresh runners show up everyday!

Guest Runners – 14 Runners

Guest Runner Solomon Tsewameskel wowed the participants today with a blistering stage.  He was the first overall finisher of the stage in a fantastic time of 50:50, threatening the course record.  He was the last to start and the first to finish, and may repeat this feat at the 10k Time Trial on Saturday.  April Boultbee was the female Guest Runner to finish, in a time of 1:06:42, showing both physical strength and strength of character in returning from injury.  Aruni Abraham had a strong brought a great smile and great energy to the stage, finishing in a time of 1:35:45.

Preview:

Tomorrow’s stage is a 30k trail run.  The numbers tell the story.  6 loops.  5k/loop.  8 hills/loop.  30k.  48 hills.  And that isn’t even dealing with what nature will throw at the runners.  Will it be rain?  Or heat and humidity?  Which is worse?  Or better?  Three minutes is not a lot of time over 30k.  What will the runners do?  Run hard and solidify their position, or hold back and save some energy for Chicopee and the marathon yet to come?  Tomorrow is the first stage where the runners will really be able to make their mark on the race.  Finishing Bechtel is an accomplishment on its own, let alone in the middle of the ENDURrun!
