Stage 1 Recap

After rain had fallen relentlessly on the pre-race meeting the night before, the runners awoke to clouds that were threatening to do just the same on race morning. So it was under the threat of rain that a record number of runners arrived at RIM Park, about to take the first steps of the 6th annual ENDURrun International journey.

With many returning participants, including former ENDURrun Champions Bob Jackman (2006) and April Boultebee (2007, 2005), there is a wealth of knowledge and experience available to those who have taken up the challenge for their first time. It will be interesting to see what strategies are chosen and who takes risks in the pursuit of the coveted Gold Jersey.

Ultimate – Male

Never before in its history have so many men taken up the challenge that the Ultimate division that the ENDURrun demands. 19 men toed the line this morning, trained and ready to compete. Bob Jackman and Jeff Ishizawa, runner-up at the 2007 ENDURrun, took out the pace quickly, establishing a lead over Chris Duke and Steve Formaneck, both ENDURrun veterans. The strategy paid dividends for Bob as he continued his strong pace, but this pace took an early toll on Jeff as he fell back around 13k. Steve’s strong pace during the second loop of the course carried him to a strong second place finish, around 2 minutes ahead of Jeff. Chris, establishing a personal best time by a whopping 3:40 minutes, finished 4th on the day.

Other stories to watch are those of Steve Gaul, who had decided to not run the Ultimate as his foot has not been holding up during the intense training but changed his mind after a strong run today, and David Nash, who is a professional boxer running to raise awareness for P.A.I.N.  As well, the three smiling men from Trinidad – Victorio, Alfred, and John - keep reminding us all how running here is like running in an air conditioned room. The stories of the many athletes will continue to develop throughout the week.

Ultimate – Women

The women’s race is shaping up to be the closest in the history of the ENDURrun. With two-time champion April Boultbee not competing in the Ultimate division this year due to injury, the vacated spot is open for any of the women. Establishing herself as a favourite today was Joanne Bink. Although she commented that she did not feel as prepared as last year, when she finished runner-up to April, Joanne pulled on the Gold Jersey at the end of the stage as she won it with a time of 1:27:41. Only 42 seconds behind her was Jackie Gorski from Rhode Island. A strong runner, Jackie looked in control all day and performed well only a day after driving 10 hours to get here. A mere 1:51 behind Jackie is Melanie Boultbee, a three-time podium finisher at the ENDURrun. The question of strategy remains: who is taking it easy? who is looking for the early lead? what does each lady have left in the tank? With six stages and 139km left to run, how will everything change when only 2:33 separating the top three women.
Other stories to watch will be those of Mary Pacell from Pennsylvania and Bronwyn Brock, who just returned from working in the Yukon. With only 1:46 separating these two women, it will be another tight battle.

While we will watch the developing races between the runners, at the ENDURrun the greatest challenge lies within each runner. While they will compete with each other each stage, the runners will use one another to motivate them to do more than they ever thought they could!

Relay - 6 Teams

Defending champions Chariots for Hire stamped their authority on this race with a blistering first leg. David Brooks won the stage overall and established a very solid lead after day one. Brian Verpagen ran well for perennial contenders Runner’s Choice Distance Dudes. Jason Knickle, competing in his first race ever, ran well to put Alpha Wolf Squadron in third position after the first day. Cheryl Wilson ran an excellent stage as the Runner’s Choice Distance, the only all-woman team, seek the Relay crown. In one of the more inspiring moments of the day, Ian Kennedy not only volunteered at the race by helping with set up in the early morning, but he also walked the half-marathon for the Dementors!

Guest Runners – 14 Runners

Guest Runners are a fantastic part of the ENDURrun. They provide new faces and fresh energy at each stage, as well as a lot of encouragement for the Ultimate Runners. Daniel Mahler was the first male guest runner today, and former Ultimate champion April Boultbee was the first woman. We really appreciate that the Guest Runners come out and support our event. Today’s Guest Runner will be next year’s Ultimate Runner!

Preview:

Tomorrow’s stage is a 15k time trial. Each runner will leave one minute after the other, with the order being the reverse of today’s finishing order. This means that Bob Jackman, wearing the men’s Gold Jersey, will be the last to leave and Joanne Bink will be the last to leave for the women, as she dons her first Gold Jersey. Will they try to increase their lead or take it easy, trying to recover for the daunting Stage 3? Is it easier to run in the Gold Jersey or let the weight of everyone trying to catch you rest on someone else’s shoulders? Watch for results tomorrow to watch how the 2008 ENDURrun International will develop.
