The best weather conditions of the week foreshadowed what was to be an incredible finish to an incredible week. Cool, overcast, no wind. An ideal backdrop to both the strategic and personal challenges ahead. The participants were anxious, so without much fanfare, the final Stage began.
Jeff ran his best all week. But to win the overall title, he had to take a chance. Jeff pushed the pace from the start and at one point had a 6 minute lead over Jon. But Jon continued his consistently strong performances by running a 2:59:59 in this first ever Marathon. Jeff won this Stage in a Personal Best time by over 20 minutes, but even that was not enough to overcome Jon’s lead that he had built up with 6 Stage victories. Congratulations Jon Belanger, 2007 ENDURrun Male Champion.
Steve Formaneck battled through painful blisters, and due to his debut Marathon time of 3:08:11, he captured 3rd Place overall. Chris Duke bettered his time in each Stage compared to last year, and ran a PB by an incredible 11 minutes today. Steve Biggs also ran a PB and qualified for Boston as well. Duff had a faster 2nd half, so to finish strong after this difficult week is truly outstanding. Chris Kay surpassed his expectations at every Stage, and his accomplishment today was remarkable. Douglas continued to accomplish whatever he set out to do, with great perseverance and inspiration.
April had her sights set on her own ENDURrun record, and needed to run under 3:14:53 to do so. April ran the 1st half in 1:37:32, a slower pace than what she needed to run. Amazingly, April picked up the pace and ran a 1:36:09 2nd half to break her own record. Congratulations April Boultbee, 2007 ENDURrun Female Champion.
Joanne had an incredible week. Facing stiff competition, Joanne ran at such a consistently high level throughout the competition, and was only 10:43 off of The ENDURrun record. Melanie had great Stages, but also had problems in some Stages, and her time is certainly not reflective of her abilities. We hope Melanie returns and runs what we know she can do.
David Brooks of the Guelph Chariots for Hire relay team ran his team to victory, capping a great week of running for their experienced team. Ultimate participants Jeff and Joanne participated on the relay teams for the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes and Runners’ Choice Distance Divas respectively.
Sharing The ENDURrun experience were Mark, Brian Josh and Katherine. We hope the support we provided allowed you to enjoy our event, and that you accomplished your goals.
There were 34 Guest runners in our event this year.
All participants should be extremely proud of what they accomplished. I am certain it is a highlight of their running career.
Very special thanks to our dedicated sponsors and volunteers. We could not have done this without you, and your support is very much appreciated.
The 2007 ENDURrun was a tremendous success, and we look forward to providing the opportunity for you to take the ultimate running challenge and accomplish a runners’ ultimate goal in 2008. Please join us.
Other awards presented today:
“Sprint King” (Cumulative time of both time trials): Male: Jon Belanger, Female: April Boultbee.
“Mountain King (Cumulative time of both mountain Stages): Male: Jon Belanger, Female: April Boultbee.
The format of The ENDURrun combines endurance and speed, patience and control, pacing and strategy. It combines road racing with technical trail running. It combines flat Stages with mountain Stages. It has time trials and mass starts. It has the pressure and challenge of racing day after day, without allowing for complete rest and recovery. It is the ultimate running challenge and a runners' ultimate goal. The ENDURrun does not favour one discipline over another, and as such, the winner of The ENDURrun is the most complete runner.
Congratulations JON BELANGER and APRIL BOULTBEE, 2007 ENDURrun Champions!
