Recap of Stage 5

Participants do not refer to this Stage as Stage 6.  They refer to it as the day after Stage 5, and for good reason.  With doubt as to how their legs would respond after the punishing Chicopee trail race the day before, and doubt about whether to rest for the Marathon tomorrow, this Stage has many considerations to take into account.  Plus, the time trial format creates additional pressure.

With a cool temperature and favourable tail wind, this flat, point to point course could provide the opportunity to run a personal best time.

Ultimate – Male (8 Competitors)

Jon once again had the advantage of starting last.  Although feeling the affects of yesterdays race, Jon made up the 1 minute stagger on 2nd place Jeff to claim his 6th Stage victory.  Jon increased his overall lead to 12:02 heading into the Marathon.  Jeff ran a PB, and also 3 minutes faster than 2006!  It was a relief to see Steve Formaneck at the start line due to his blisters, and Steve finished 3rd in this Stage and is 3rd overall.

Steve Biggs finished 4th, his best Stage placing so far and is looking good going into the last Stage.  Chris Duke ran a PB, and also 3 minutes faster than 2006!  Duff ran his fastest 10 km in recent memory.  Chris Kay also ran a PB.  Douglas improved on his time from 2005.

Ultimate – Female (3 Competitors)

Fighting a head cold, April won her 6th Stage with a sub-40 10 km and has an 11:41 lead heading into the Marathon.  We hope April feels better tomorrow.  Joanne finished right on her goal and has paced herself well throughout the event.  Melanie continues to run well, and to run 41:07 on a tender ankle is amazing.

Relay (3 Teams)

Vic Paneghal ran a PB to lead his Guelph Chariots for Hire team to victory, with Joanna Fedy of the Runners’ Choice Distance Divas finishing 2nd followed by Don MacLeod of the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes relay team.  The Guelph team now has a commanding 40:59 overall lead.

Guest Runners (11 Competitors)

Four Guest Runners set Personal Bests, and this was the first 10 km for two Guest Runners.  There were many exceptional performances today, to numerous to mention.  If you are looking for a fast course to run, please consider running this event in the future.

From the Race Director

This was the biggest field we have ever had, with 27 runners.  Overall, nine Personal Bests were set and three ran their first 10 km distance.

Three Ultimate runners ran PB’s today, a testament to their incredible strength and courage by not holding anything back for tomorrow’s Marathon.

With only one Stage to go, everyone will now have a last opportunity tonight to spend a relaxing evening together, with good food and friendship, strengthening the great bonds made throughout this incredible week.

Congratulations everyone.  Rest well, and best of luck tomorrow.  We’ll be there for you.
