Recap of Stage 1

Very favourable running conditions welcomed the participants to Stage 2, a 15 KM Time Trial at beautiful Riverside Park in Cambridge.  Runners would start 1 minute apart, in reverse order of finish from Stage 1.

A little tight, a little sore, a little nervous.  Excited, cautious.  These were some of the comments relayed to me as I had one minute to talk privately with each participant prior to sending them on their way.  Not only were participants dealing with fatigue from running a half marathon yesterday, but they had to face the unique challenges that a Time Trial format creates.

Ultimate – Male (9 Competitors)

Jon almost made up the 1 minute stagger on Jeff, and ran to his 2nd Stage victory while increasing his overall lead by a further 56 seconds.  Jon retained his Gold Jersey for his fine effort.  Remaining in 2nd place overall, Jeff continued to better his times from last year, and is over 5 minutes ahead of last years pace.  Bob moved into 3rd place overall while continuing to nurse a foot injury.

Steve Formaneck ran very well and finished 4th in this Stage, followed by Chris Duke, who also is well ahead of his 2006 pace and running strong.  Steven Biggs was 6th in this Stage, but remains 5th overall.

After Duff made up the 3 minute stagger on Chris Kay, they finished the race together showing great spirit.  Douglas continues to run at his pace, and knows what’s ahead of him as a two-time Ultimate finisher.

Ultimate – Female (3 Competitors)

April won her 2nd consecutive Stage and is ahead of her record pace after 2 Stages.  April has earned the honour of continuing to wear the Gold Jersey.  Staying very close to April is Joanne, making their battle very exciting.  Melanie rebounded with a great effort, and was within one second of Joanne in this Stage.

Relay (3 Teams)

Stephen Kilburn of the Guelph Chariots for Hire relay team added another 6 minutes to their overall lead with a fine run today.  David Bedrosian of the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes finished 2nd and Bronwyn Brock of the Runners’ Choice Distance Divas finished 3rd.  Their team members should be proud of their performances today.

Guest Runners (11 Competitors)

Shauna Carter ran her 2nd Stage and experienced the challenge of running two races back to back.  It was great training for her, and she hopes to return again next year.  So do we.

From the Race Director

What a great day.  Excellent competition, strategy, atmosphere, camaraderie, food, weather.

Rest well participants.  Tomorrow’s Stage is very demanding.  Good luck!
