Recap of Stage 1

It took a lot of courage to sign up for The ENDURrun.  It took a lot of determination to train for The ENDURrun.  And it took a lot of guts to show up to the starting line.  But twelve brave individuals assembled at the starting line of Stage 1 of The 5th Annual ENDURrun, and were about to begin what could be the highlight of their running career.

It was warm, humid and windy, but overall it was much better weather conditions than we have been experiencing recently.  The rain started to fall when only the race crew were left, dismantling the race site.

Ultimate – Male (9 Competitors)

Bob Jackman, 2006 Champion, was back to defend his title.  Unfortunately, injuries have limited his training recently, and he admitted his conditioning has suffered.  Nevertheless, there was an incredible and exciting finish as Jon Belanger overtook Jeff Ashizawa late in the race and held on to victory by a close 10 seconds.  Jon will now have the honour of wearing the Gold Jersey for Stage 2.  Chris Duke finished in 3rd place today.  Both Jeff and Chris are 2006 finishers and both bettered their times from last year by two to three minutes.  Bob cautiously finished in 4th place.

Newcomers Steve Biggs, Steve Formaneck, Duff McLaren and Chris Kay all ran great today, and now have one Stage behind them.  It will be interesting to see how they cope with the challenge ahead of them, a challenge like they have never experienced before.

Douglas Harder has completed the 2004 and 2005 ENDURrun, and always provides inspiration for everyone involved with this event.  It is great to have you back for the third time Douglas.

Ultimate – Female (3 Competitors)

The phrase for 2007 is “it’s not quantity, it’s quality”.  With three elite female participants, it will be a battle each Stage.  April Boultbee, the 2005 Champion and record holder, narrowly edged out newcomer Joanne Bink by 27 seconds.  Unfortunately, Melanie Boultbee experienced stomach problems, and her performance today is not reflective of her ability. We are confident Melanie will bounce back tomorrow to create an even more exciting finish.  April will have the honour of wearing the Gold Jersey for Stage 2.

Relay (3 Teams)

The experienced team from Guelph, Chariots for Hire, showed they will be a force in this event, with their Stage 1 team member Adrian Daniel completing the half marathon in 1:22:22, giving them a commanding lead.  Brian Verspagen of the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes finished 2nd and Vicki Golding of the Runners’ Choice Distance Divas finished 3rd.  Everyone had a great time, which is what this event is all about.

Guest Runners (11 Competitors)

Being a Guest Runner is a great way of experiencing The ENDURrun.  Seven great Stages, seven different distances, seven unique challenges to choose from.  Thanks to everyone who participated today, from the experienced to the first time half marathoners.  We hope it was all you expected, and more.  It would be great to have you back.

From the Race Director

Thanks again race crew, you are the best.  Price Health Centre, the participants say you are the best.  Thanks to all the generous sponsors who make this event possible.

Congratulations to all participants in The 5th Annual ENDURrun.

Good luck in Stage 2 tomorrow, a 15 km time trial in Riverside Park, Cambridge Ontario.
