Brief recap of Stage 6:
Stage 6 represented the biggest transition between the Stages. Coming off a long, hilly trail race yesterday, today’s test was a 10 km Time Trial on flat roads. The course was a point to point route, from Elmira to Conestogo through farming country. The weather was overcast with a slight head wind, and certainly exceptional conditions considering the recent heat and humidity of late.
Feeling the effects of 5 Stages, there is certainly the temptation to take this Stage easy and rest for the Marathon tomorrow. But the Time Trial format puts additional pressure on the participants.
Bob had the distinct advantage, being the last to start, and had the strategy of just keeping Brad in his sights and maintaining the same 1 minute stagger between them. Brad of the other hand, did not know how fast Bob was running behind him, and was perhaps forced to run differently than if they had started together. Both ended up running very much the same pace, with Brad winning this Stage in 35:24, 6 seconds ahead of Bob. Congratulations Brad for your victory in Stage 6. Heading into the final Stage, both Bob and Brad have won 3 Stages each, with Bob holding a 3:11 overall lead, maintaining the Gold Jersey.
Trevor Feeney of the Runners’ Choice Distance Dude’s Relay Team added to their overall lead.
Six Guest runners participated. It was Ken’s 3rd Stage. Josh ran a PB. Katrina finished her 6th Stage in fine form. Joanne had been tempted all week to participate in a Stage, and picked the 10 km, while supporting husband Jeff all week. Dexter ran great. And Jason came to see good friend Brad. That’s what this event is all about.
This week is not the most ideal way to taper for a Marathon, so we will see the effects on the participant’s tomorrow.
Best of luck, we’ll be there for you.
