Brief recap of Stage 5:

Stage 5 is the most difficult of the Stages. Up and down large ski hills, combined with technical trails, would test yet another of the participant’s running abilities. Each loop had four major climbs, and with the course being five loops, this was certain to be a real test of both physical endurance and mental toughness.

The weather was hot and seasonal, but mild compared to last years severe lightning and rain.

The course was marked so that no marshalls were required, which increased the number in our cheering sections. There were 3 water stations per loop, totalling 15 water stations throughout the 25.6 km distance.

After 2 loops, 4 participants (2 Ultimate, 1 Relay and 1 Guest runner) were within 15 seconds. The 3rd loop is where Bob decided to make his move, and a surge just after 11 km created some distance between Brad. Bob took advantage of the gap and continued to push the pace throughout the remainder of the race. Bob erased Brad’s 1:27 overall lead heading into this Stage, and now has a 3:17 overall lead to claim the Gold Jersey. Congratulations Bob on a gutsy Stage 5 victory.

The pre-race preparation of Jeff, Steven and Chris was evident which allowed them to run so remarkably well on such an intimidating course.

The Runners’ Choice Distance Dude’s relay team increased their overall lead with a great run by Peter Van Driel. Congratulations also to Andrea Dupont of the Runners’ Choice Distance Diva’s relay team.

Mike Strano was a welcome addition to our race today, being the reining ENDURrun Champion. And Katrina continued with her 5th Stage today and has been running great all week. Thanks Guest runners, and congratulations.

With the hardest Stage now over, the participants must now focus on the shortest and quickest of the Stages, a 10 km Time Trial tomorrow. Many interesting strategies will be used, and is sure to be very exciting.
