8 Days . . . 7 Stages . . . 160 km . . . 1 Tough Runner!

With one Stage to go, the athletes could finally use up everything they had left. No need to think ahead or pace themselves for the next race. Their only focus was the Marathon, which alone is an incredible endurance feat, a race that most runners specifically prepare for, and taper for. Racing almost 118 km during the previous 7 days would not permit fresh legs to be on the starting line. Unless you’ve run The ENDURrun before, nothing could prepare you for how you would respond during this last Stage. Ten participants, ten goals. Excitement, caution, confidence, focus. What an incredible atmosphere.

Once again, better than anticipated weather conditions removed this as an excuse, leaving each participants own mental and physical limitations as the difference between accomplishing their goal and not.

Like a true champion worthy of the Gold jersey, Mike Strano capped off an impressive week by running to the Marathon victory in 3:08:41 and capturing the overall victory in 11:21:16. Mike had a definite strategy in this event, and used the two long trail runs to build up his overall lead, while not having much trail running experience. Congratulations Mike!

The amazingly consistent Tim Clarke was 2nd in the Marathon. Tim had six 2nd place Stage finishes and one 3rd place Stage finish throughout this event, giving Tim 2nd place overall. I know Tim had a pre-race goal of finishing under 12 hours, and by finishing in 11:55:34, Tim should be very proud.

Adam Johnston finished 3rd in the Marathon Stage, and also approached this event with a definite strategy. Adam showed tremendous patience, pacing himself until making his move on the two trail runs. Adam then had to beat April Boultbee by 3:58 in the Marathon Stage to claim 3rd place overall. Dramatically, Adam beat April by 3:44, leaving him just 14 seconds behind after 160 km. Although slowing down in the final homestretch to kiss his little baby girl cost him a few seconds, Adam would not have missed that precious opportunity under any circumstance.

April won the women’s division in a record 12:13:16, beating the previous record by an amazing 2:18:30! April also claimed 3rd place overall by running superbly all week. April took a huge gamble in the 10 km Time Trial, pushing to the Stage victory and holding nothing back. It could have proved costly for her Marathon Stage, but April showed tremendous endurance and ran remarkably well in the Marathon.

Melanie Boultbee was 5th overall (2nd female) and had two 3rd place Stage finishes to her credit. The friendly and supportive, but at the same time competitive nature between Melanie and her twin sister April was incredible.

Steven Parke (6th overall, 4th male) is now the only participant to have completed all 3 ENDURrun’s. Steven has consistently progressed in both speed and strength since 2003, and will be a fixture at The ENDURrun for many more years.

Andrea Cobham (7th overall, 3rd female) was wary of the long Marathon Stage as the last race, but it did not affect her performances throughout the week. Andrea ran extremely well each and every Stage, and her concern about the Marathon was not apparent as she ran close to a personal best time.

Julie Stonehouse (8th overall, 4th female) also broke the female record, but faced stiff competition from a strong field. Julie had the biggest smile throughout the entire event, and her appreciative nature was a very welcomed addition to this event.

Dan Callaghan (9th overall, 5th male) decided to enter The 2005 ENDURrun while still competing in The 2004 ENDURrun. With tired legs, Dan demonstrated his mental toughness by persisting to the end. Great performance Dan, and if not called for overseas duty next year, we hope to see you again in 2006.

Douglas Harder (10th overall, 6th male) was once again the inspirational leader. Thanks Douglas, for leading the way, and demonstrating what can be accomplished through perseverance and will.

A very sincere congratulations to all participants for displaying such endurance and fine sportsmanship.

In the Sport division, Harold Mah has now set the standard for those who have the courage to follow. Harold ran a tough 77.8 km over the last 3 Stages to become the first ever Sport Champion. Congratulations on a fine series of races Harold!

In the Relay, the Investors Group moved into 1st place after Stage 3 and never looked back. Congratulations to team captain Patrick Campbell and all of the team members.

The format of The ENDURrun combines endurance and speed, patience and control, pacing and strategy. It combines road racing with technical trail running. It combines flat Stages with mountain Stages. It has time trials and mass starts. It has the pressure and challenge of racing day after day, without allowing for complete rest and recovery. It is the ultimate running challenge and a runners' ultimate goal. The ENDURrun does not favour one discipline over another, and as such, the winner of The ENDURrun is the most complete runner. Congratulations MIKE STRANO 2005 ENDURrun Champion!
