Brief recap of Stage 5:
For the first time in The ENDURrun’s short history, bad weather played a factor. A severe lightning storm pounded the area for many hours prior to race start, leaving the trails muddy, slippery, and in some sections submerged under water. The course had a much higher degree of difficulty compared to last year, and included 4 major hill climbs and many tight trails per loop. This Stage is by far the most difficult of the Stages, and the bad weather greatly compounded the difficulty.
Disappointingly, many of the trail marking flags were repositioned during the night. While we repaired most of the damage by start time, unfortunately one of the turns was left ambiguous, causing the lead pack to get separated at one point. This caused some runners to run the section of the trail that they missed during a later loop in the race. Not only did this deprive the runners of the opportunity of running in a pack, but it also deprived the spectators of an exciting battle with many lead changes.
Leading the way once again was Mike Strano. Not having the opportunity to run many technical trails in his career, Mike certainly did not look out of place as he displayed great form throughout this difficult challenge. Adam Johnston made a bold move by pushing to a 2nd place finish today, and more importantly, into 3rd place in the overall standings Tim Clarke held on to 3rd place, and as a self-professed road racer, is glad to get this Stage over with. April and Melanie Boultbee ran side by side for the first 24 km until April surged away to claim victory in female division. Both Mike and April retained their Gold jerseys.
Ryne Melcher edged out Peter Van Driel and increased the Investors Group lead in the Relay.
Guest runner Bradley Cunningham was having so much fun that he decided to participate in today’s Stage as well, and challenged Mike for the overall lead until the very end. Tereza Macel finished her two great trail runs this week. Thanks for taking part!
This Stage caused the most anxiety amongst the participants, and for good reason. This course is long and demanding. Combined with what they have run so far, and what’s ahead, all should be congratulated for their tremendous display of endurance.
The biggest transitional run is tomorrow, as the runners come off a mountainous trail run to compete in a flat 10 km road race on Saturday, which is also a time trial. Good luck!
