Brief recap of Stage 6:
With the effects of yesterday’s long and gruelling mountain Stage still lingering in their legs, the participants were faced with the challenge of the shortest, flattest and fastest Stage – the 10 km time trial. Strategies could be varied. Some could use this as the recovery Stage between the mountains and the marathon, but possibly lose some time in the overall standings. Some could decide to run it hard, but risk fatigue for the marathon the next day.
The weather has been perfect all week, but it could not have been any better than today. It was bright, sunny and cool, with a noticeable tailwind. The course was a flat point-to-point route, with an overall drop in elevation, and only 4 turns. The conditions were perfect for those going for a fast time, should their body allow.
Having started the runners one minute apart, I then had to drive to the finish line to record the results. As I passed each of the participants, I was fortunate to witness their incredible concentration and perseverance.
Charles was as focused as I’ve ever seen, and I barely beat him to the finish line. Everyone was amazed as we could see Charles and his bright gold jersey about 1 km from the finish, and the clock was only showing 28 minutes. Charles ran the last km in 2:59 and finished the 10 km in 30:54, which was one of his fastest 10 km ever.
The ENDURrun experience for Catherine and Steven has been really great to watch. Both have paced themselves perfectly, are well ahead of last years times, and are still feeling strong going into the marathon Stage tomorrow.
Nathan ran his usual strong and consistent race, but he now has to run his first ever marathon tomorrow. Jay is battling through a slight injury, but easily makes up for this with his mental toughness and positive outlook. Dan ran very strong today, and seems to be getting stronger as this event goes along, and is even looking forward to next years event already. Douglas, even after running 108 km over the past 6 days, ran a 10 km in under one hour for the first time.
In the Relay, Longboat continued to add their already comfortable lead, but the real race is now for 2nd place where a 10 minute lead is not large considering the marathon distance.
Many questions and challenges remain as we head into the final Stage. Stay tuned for our final update tomorrow, as the exciting 2nd Annual ENDURrun concludes.
