Brief recap of Stage 4:

For the first time in the history of The ENDURrun, bad weather was threatening. Rain was forecast and the winds were strong, which would certainly add to the difficulty of this very hilly and challenging 10 mile course. But dramatically, just as the runners walked the 600 m to the start line, the sky cleared and the wind died down, making for perfect running conditions once again.

Following yesterday morning’s tiring 30 km trail run, this Stage was held in the evening, allowing the participants a few extra hours of much needed rest. Spirits were high, and concentration was evident on the faces of all the participants as this Stage started, appropriately at the bottom of a hill climb.

Full of confidence and adrenaline due to his superb performances in the first three Stages, Charles Bedley looked smooth and relaxed as he dominated the endless hills and once again beat last years time, by and incredible 2:13. Charles has spent the past year focusing on this event, preparing himself both physically and mentally for the demands of this gruelling event, and it is clear that Charles is stronger in every aspect of his running as he is bettering his times for every Stage from a year ago. Cumulatively, Charles is now 5:50 faster than last year after 4 Stages.

It is also clear that experience is valuable, as both Catherine and Steven have once again run faster than a year ago for this Stage. Catherine bettered her time from last year by 6:10 and Steven bettered his time from last year by 2:34. And both have stated that they still feel strong even after 82.2 km.

Dan, for sure, was glad to get off the trails and back on the roads, even if it was hilly today. Nathan continues to warm down with his bike ride. Douglas has yet to stop during a run, and his consistency is amazing. Jay ran the last few km with my son Jordan who was running his Relay Stage, and Jay’s company was appreciated by both Jordan and proud Dad.

Guest runner Adam completed his 4th consecutive Stage, as he couldn’t resist running on his old training route.

The Relay competition is getting interesting, as all 3 Relay Teams closed the gap on the leading Crazy Canucks. And as the Chicopee course can be cruel, large leads can disappear very quickly. Stay tuned.

Tomorrow is a well deserved rest day, a time to prepare for the most gruelling of the Stages on Friday morning.
