Brief recap of Stage 3:
Not only is this Stage the second longest Stage, but being a trail run added another degree of difficulty. The weather was not a factor once again. It was hot, but normal for the season. The dew on the ground was also expected but nevertheless created wet socks and blisters. The trails through beautiful Bechtel Park afforded welcomed shade from the sun for half of the 30 km distance.
Using his experience to his fullest advantage, Charles Bedley started conservatively and completed his first loop a full 35 seconds slower than last years first loop. Pacing himself perfectly, Charles pressed on and not only made up this 35 second deficit, but finished an incredible 1:14 faster than last year.
It is interesting to note that all the returnees (Charles, Steven and Catherine) bettered their 2003 times by wide margins. Increased mental and physical preparation, plus the experience of knowing what to expect, are obviously paying dividends. It is hoped that new participants Nathan, Jay, Dan and Douglas have also paced themselves enough to allow them to complete the remaining 94 km.
The 6-loop course allowed those in attendance the opportunity to witness the incredible perseverance of the participants.
Guest runner Adam completed his 3rd consecutive Stage, and is truly enjoying the experience.
The Crazy Canucks added to their overall lead in the Relay, and now have a very big lead of 32:30.
We wish all the participants well as we now head into the difficult hilly Stages.
