Brief recap of Stage 2:
Stage 2 was a time trial, with runners starting 1 minute apart, in reverse order of finish from Stage 1. Charles Bedley, wearing the Gold Jersey, started last. Against the backdrop of beautiful Riverside Park, the weather conditions were perfect once again.
Although a number of participants indicated that they were experiencing various minor physical aches, everyone's spirits were high and there was excitement as the runners were sent off one at a time.
The runners ran a 2.5 km loop of the park back to the starting area before heading out onto the roads, allowing the spectators to see how the gaps between the runners changed after 2.5 km. Some gaps widened while some gaps disappeared. That is the exciting, fluid nature of a time trial, which also adds pressure to the participants.
True to form, Charles accomplished his pre-race goal of bettering his 2003 time of 50:24 by running a quick 49:43, giving him a 28:43 lead in the overall standings.
All participants should be commended for their accomplishment today. Running a 15 km race the day after a half-marathon, knowing there is a 30 km the next day, is quite a feat.
In the Relay, the Crazy Canucks increased their overall lead to a commanding 9:38, while a very close race for 3rd place is developing.
All runners have a strongest discipline, whether it is roads or trails, hills or flats, 10 km distance or the marathon. The variety in The ENDURrun allows participants to greatly change the overall standings from one Stage to the next, and this will certainly be evident as we head on to the trails tomorrow.
Congratulations today, and good luck tomorrow.
